1. 議論や調査において、主要な問題から注意をそらすために提示されるもの。誤解を招く情報や手がかり。

主要な問題や議論から人々の注意を意図的にそらすための情報、手がかり、または行動を指す言葉です。特にミステリーや議論、政治的な状況で使われます。元々は燻製ニシン（レッドヘリング）が強い臭いを持ち、犬の訓練で注意をそらすために使われたことに由来するとされます。
