1. 「万一～という事態になった場合」や「もしも～という状況になったら」という仮定を表す表現。

ある事態や状況が実際に起こるかどうかは不明だが、もしそれが起こった場合にどうなるかを述べるときに用いられます。文頭や文中に挿入され、接続詞的に機能します。

If it happens that I am late, please start without me. (万一私が遅れるようなことがあれば、私なしで始めてください。)

• If it happens that: もし〜という事態になったら、という仮定を表します。
• I am late: 私が遅れる。
• please start: 始めてください。
• without me: 私なしで。
