1. 金銭や恩恵を与えて、相手の反対や批判を止めさせたり、不正な行動を阻止したりすること。

主に賄賂や不正な金銭を用いて、ある人物やグループの抵抗、批判、または行動を抑え込み、問題を解決しようとする際に使われます。道徳的に疑わしい状況でよく用いられます。

The corrupt politician attempted to buy off the newspaper editor. (その腐敗した政治家は、新聞編集者を金で買収しようと試みた。)
