1. 文字や文章を理解する行為

文字や文章を視覚的に認識し、その意味を理解する行為。知識の獲得や物語の追体験に繋がる。

I like to read books in my free time. (暇な時に本を読むのが好きです。)

She can read Japanese fluently. (彼女は日本語を流暢に読むことができます。)

2. 情報やサインを解釈・理解する行為

文字だけでなく、状況や兆候から意味を読み取る行為。人の気持ちや未来の予測にも用いられる。

He can read people's emotions very well. (彼は人の感情をとてもよく読み取ることができます。)

The doctor read the X-ray and diagnosed the patient. (医者はレントゲンを読み、患者を診断しました。)

3. 機械の表示を読み取る

メーターやデジタル表示などから数値を読み取る行為。

I read the thermometer and it was 38 degrees. (体温計を読んだら38度だった。)

He read the odometer and knew how far they had traveled. (彼は走行距離計を読み、どれだけ移動したかを知った。)

4. 朗読する、声に出して読む行為

文章を声に出して読み上げる行為。物語を共有したり、情報を伝達する手段となる。

She read a story to her children. (彼女は子供たちに物語を読み聞かせました。)

The teacher read the instructions aloud to the class. (先生はクラスに指示を声に出して読みました。)
