1. 経済が停滞（低成長や高失業率）しているにもかかわらず、物価が継続的に上昇し続ける状態。

通常、経済が停滞すると物価上昇は抑えられ、景気回復期にインフレが進むとされますが、スタグフレーションはその常識に反し、景気後退期にもかかわらず物価上昇が続く異常な経済現象を指します。これは政府や中央銀行にとって非常に困難な課題となります。
