1. ある特定の分野における専門家ではない一般人。

特定の分野において、専門的な訓練や知識を持たない一般の人を指す際に使われます。特に法律、医学、科学などの専門職に対して用いられます。

To a layman, the legal terms can be very confusing. (一般の人にとって、法律用語は非常に分かりにくいことがあります。)
