1. 物事の結果が最後の最後まで決まらないこと、または締め切りぎりぎりまで時間がないこと。

何かの結果が最後まで決まらない、または期限ぎりぎりまで活動が続く状況を示します。特に、非常に緊迫した状況や接戦を表現する際に使われます。元々は競馬で、勝者がゴールライン（ワイヤー）を通過する最後の瞬間まで決まらないほどの接戦を指していました。

The election went down to the wire, with neither candidate clearly ahead until the final votes were counted. (選挙は、最後の票が数えられるまでどちらの候補者も明確なリードがなく、最後までもつれ込んだ。)
