1. 状況、事態（特に、以前とは全く異なる新しい状況や局面）

スポーツの試合になぞらえて、ある事柄や状況全体を指します。特に「a whole new ball game」という形で、「全く新しい状況」や「これまでとは違う局面」を表現する際によく使われる表現です。
