1. 徐々に弱らせる、基盤を損なう

何か（信頼、権威、システムなど）が、外部からの攻撃ではなく、内側から、あるいは気づかないうちに、徐々にその力や安定性を失っていく様子を表します。土台を掘り崩すイメージに近い。

Years of neglect had seriously undermined the bridge's structure. (長年の放置が、橋の構造を著しく弱体化させていた。)
