1. 18世紀後半から19世紀初頭に主に英国で流行した、恐怖、神秘、死、超自然的な要素、ロマンス、ゴシック建築などを特徴とする文学ジャンル。しばしば荒廃した城や修道院などを舞台とする。

暗い雰囲気、超自然的な要素、荒廃した城や邸宅などの舞台設定が特徴で、人間の心の闇や社会の病理を探求することが多い文学の形態です。ロマン主義文学の一派として発展しました。
