1. 拍手をする。手を叩いて音を出す。

手のひらを合わせて音を出し、主に何かを称賛したり、同意したり、喜びを表したりする行為です。

The audience began to clap loudly after the performance. (観客はパフォーマンスの後、大きな拍手をし始めました。)

• The audience: 観客
• began to clap: 拍手をし始めた
• loudly: 大きな音で、声援を送りながら
• after the performance: パフォーマンスの後で

Everyone clapped when the singer hit the high note. (歌手が高い音を出したとき、皆が拍手しました。)

2. 何かを素早く、または鋭く叩いて音を出す。

手や他の物体を使って、別の物体を素早く、勢いよく叩き、特徴的な音を発生させる様子を表します。

He clapped his hands to get everyone's attention. (彼はみんなの注意を引くために手を叩きました。)

• to get: 得るために
• everyone's attention: みんなの注意

The teacher clapped the chalk dust off his hands. (先生は手に付いたチョークの粉を叩き落としました。)

The sudden thunder clapped over our heads. (突然の雷が頭上で鳴り響きました。)

3. 何かを軽くたたくように置いたり、勢いよく押し付けたりする。

物理的な接触を伴いながら、何かを素早く動かしたり、特定の位置に置いたりする状況で使われます。必ずしも大きな音を伴うわけではありません。

She clapped a hand over her mouth in surprise. (彼女は驚いて口に手を当てました。)

• in surprise: 驚いて

The police clapped him in irons. (警察は彼に手錠をかけました。)
