1. 新しい土地の所有権を主張し定住するために人々が急速に競争的に移動すること。

主にアメリカ西部開拓時代に見られた、政府が未開の土地を一般に開放する際に、人々が一斉にその土地に殺到し、自分の区画を確保しようとする社会現象を指します。土地は富と機会の象徴でした。
