1. 景気や状況が最も悪い状態に達し、それ以上悪くならないこと。どん底。

主に経済や状況など、何かが悪化の一途をたどった末に、それ以上悪くならない状態、つまりどん底に達したイメージです。そこから回復に向かうことが示唆される場合によく使われます。

The economy appears to have bottomed out and is starting to recover. (景気はどうやらどん底に達したようで、回復し始めている。)

• appears: 「～のように見える」「～と思われる」という意味です。
