1. 複数の選択肢があるように見えて、実際には一つの選択肢しかない状況。

実際には「これを選ぶか、何も選ばないか」という二者択一しかない状況、または単一の選択肢しかない状況を指します。他の選択肢がないことを強調する際に使われます。

The company offered him a job with a low salary, saying it was Hobson's choice as there were no other positions available. (会社は彼に低賃金の仕事を提示し、他に空きがないためホブソンの選択だと言った。)
