1. 荷車や犂（すき）を引かせるために、2頭の動物（特に牛）の首や肩に取り付ける木製の棒。または、それによって課せられる重荷や束縛。

主に2頭の牛を繋いで農作業などに使われる器具を指しますが、転じて、人々を拘束する重荷や支配、抑圧といった抽象的な意味でも使われます。

The farmer put the yoke on the oxen. (農夫は雄牛に軛を取り付けた。)
