1. 石炭や木材などから得られる、黒くて粘り気のある液体。舗装や防水などに使われる。

天然物または精製されたもので、黒く粘り気のある、防水性や接着性を持つ液体を指します。道路の舗装や屋根の防水、船の木材保護などに用いられます。

2. （口語、古い表現）水夫、船乗り。

口語的で、特に経験豊かな船乗りや水夫を親しみを込めて指すときに使われる言葉です。昔の船乗りがタールで船の防水作業を行ったことから、この名で呼ばれるようになったと言われています。
