1. 公式の許可や承認。

何かを行うことに対して、権威のある組織や個人が正式に許可を与えたり、認めたりする状況を表します。

The plan received official sanction. (その計画は公式の承認を得た。)

• official: 公式の。
• sanction: 承認、許可。

The committee refused to give its sanction to the project. (委員会はそのプロジェクトへの承認を与えるのを拒否した。)

2. 特に国際法において、特定の国や団体に対する経済的、政治的、その他の強制措置。

特定の国や団体が国際的な規範に反する行動をとった場合に、その行動を改めさせる目的で、経済や外交など様々な面から課される強制的な措置を指します。
