1. 声がかすれたり、しわがれたりしている状態。

声帯の炎症などにより、声が澄んでおらず、ざらざらしたり、出にくくなったりしている様子を示します。風邪や大声を出しすぎた時などによく使われます。

My throat is sore and my voice is a little hoarse. (喉が痛くて、声が少し枯れている。)

• My throat: 私の喉

• is a little hoarse: 少し声が枯れている

He shouted so much that he became hoarse. (彼は大声で叫びすぎて声が枯れた。)

2. 声が枯れてしまっている人や動物の状態。

声がかすれているために、通常の話し方ができない状態の個人そのものを指すこともあります。例えば、風邪で声が出にくい人が「I'm hoarse.」と言う場合などです。

I'm so hoarse from shouting at the game. (試合で叫びすぎて、ひどく声が枯れている。)
