1. 雑種の犬、特に価値のない犬や不親切な犬

一般的に、血統が不明な犬、または価値が低い、あるいは不親切な態度をとる犬を指す蔑称です。

That stray cur barked at me as I passed by. (その野良犬が私が通り過ぎると吠えかかってきた。)

• That stray cur: 「その野良犬」（strayは「迷い込んだ、野良の」curは「雑種犬、取るに足らない犬」）
• barked at me: 「私に吠えかかってきた」
• as I passed by: 「私が通り過ぎると」

She rescued a poor, shivering cur from the street. (彼女は通りで震えているかわいそうな雑種犬を救った。)

• a poor, shivering cur: 「かわいそうで震えている雑種犬」

The farmer's dog, a loyal cur, always protected the sheep. (農夫の犬、忠実な雑種犬はいつも羊を守っていた。)

• a loyal cur: 「忠実な雑種犬」（ここでは必ずしも蔑称ではなく、「雑種だが」というニュアンス）

2. 卑劣な人物、取るに足らない人

人に対して使われる場合、その人が卑劣である、あるいは価値のない人間であるという強い侮蔑を込めた表現です。

He called his opponent a cringing cur during the heated debate. (彼は激しい討論中に相手を卑屈な奴と呼んだ。)

• He called: 「彼は呼んだ」
• his opponent: 「彼の対戦相手を」
• a cringing cur: 「卑屈な卑劣漢」（cringingは「卑屈な」、curは「卑劣な人、取るに足らない人」）
• during the heated debate: 「激しい討論中に」

Only a cur would betray his friends for personal gain. (個人的な利益のために友人を裏切るのは卑劣漢だけだ。)
