1. 紐などで結ばれたり、縛られたりしている状態。

物や人が紐などで結ばれて、動かないように固定されている様子を表します。

The rope was tied around the box. (ロープが箱の周りに結びつけられていた。)

• The rope: そのロープ。
• was tied: 結びつけられていた（受動態）。
• around the box: 箱の周りに。

Her hair was tied back with a ribbon. (彼女の髪はリボンで後ろに結ばれていた。)

• Her hair: 彼女の髪。
• was tied back: 後ろに結ばれていた。
• with a ribbon: リボンで。

The prisoner was tied to a chair. (囚人は椅子に縛り付けられていた。)

2. 行動や選択が制限されている状態、あるいは資金などが拘束されて自由に利用できない状態。

物理的な拘束だけでなく、時間や資金などが特定のものに費やされ、他のことに使えない状況を指します。

I'm tied up with work all week. (今週はずっと仕事で手がいっぱいです。)

• I'm tied up: 私は手がいっぱいだ、身動きが取れない。
• with work: 仕事で。
• all week: 今週ずっと。

My money is tied up in real estate. (私のお金は不動産に縛られている（投資されている）。)

3. 競争相手と同じ得点や結果になり、引き分けの状態。

スポーツの試合などで、両者または複数の参加者が同じ得点や成績で、勝敗が決まっていない状態を表します。

The two teams were tied at the end of the match. (試合終了時、2つのチームは同点だった。)

• The two teams: その2つのチーム。
• were tied: 同点だった（be tiedで「同点である」）。
• at the end of the match: 試合の終わりに。

They were tied for first place. (彼らは1位で並んでいた（同点だった）。)

• They were tied: 彼らは同点だった。
• for first place: 1位で。
