1. 物理学において、ある物理量が持ちうる最小の単位。不連続な量のひとまとまり。

物理学、特に量子力学において、エネルギーや物質、その他の物理量が連続的ではなく、特定の離散的な「塊（かたまり）」や「パケット」として存在することを示す際に使われます。この「塊」や「パケット」一つ一つを指します。

量子という言葉が持つ「最小単位」という厳密な意味から離れ、比喩的に、物事が急激に、かつ大きく発展したり変化したりする様子を表す際に使われます。まるでジャンプするように、それまでの状態から大きく飛躍した状態を指します。

This new technology represents a quantum leap in computing power. (この新技術はコンピューティング能力における飛躍的な進歩を示す。)
