1. 助けや保護がなく、自分で身を守ることができない状態。

誰かの助けが必要で、自分では何もできないと感じる状態を表します。特に、困難な状況で自分に何もできないと感じるときに使われます。

The kitten looked so helpless, shivering in the cold. (その子猫は寒さで震えながら、とても無力に見えた。)
