1. 泥、汚物、動物の糞

地面にある泥や、動物の糞、あるいはその他の汚れた物質を指します。不快感や厄介な状況を連想させることもあります。

The car got stuck in the deep muck. (車は深い泥にはまってしまった。)

• The car: その車
• got stuck: はまった、身動きがとれなくなった
• in the deep muck: 深い泥の中に

There was muck all over his boots. (彼のブーツには泥がべっとりついていた。)

• There was: ～があった
• muck: 泥、汚物
• all over: ～の至る所に
• his boots: 彼のブーツ

They cleared the muck from the stable. (彼らは厩舎から汚物を取り除いた。)

• They: 彼らは
• cleared: 取り除いた

2. 汚す、台無しにする、時間を無駄にする

物を汚したり、計画などを台無しにしたり、あるいはぶらぶらして時間を浪費するといった行動を表します。動詞として使われる場合は、しばしば「muck up」や「muck about/around」といった句動詞の形で用いられます。

Don't muck up your clean clothes. (きれいな服を汚さないで。)

• Don't muck up: ～を台無しにするな、汚すな
• your clean clothes: あなたのきれいな服

He really mucked up the presentation. (彼は本当にプレゼンテーションを台無しにした。)

• He: 彼は
• really mucked up: 本当に台無しにした

Stop mucking about and get some work done! (だらだらするのはやめて、仕事を終わらせなさい！)
