1. 目的や目標を達成できないこと、または期待外れに終わること。

設定された目標や期待に対して、結果がそれに達しない、あるいは失敗に終わる状況を表現します。本来狙っていた的を外す、という意味合いから転じて、期待された効果が得られない場合に使われます。

His efforts to impress the boss completely missed the mark. (彼のボスを感動させようとする努力は完全に的外れだった。)
