1. すなわち、つまり、言い換えれば

ラテン語の 'id est' の略で、『すなわち』『つまり』という意味です。前に述べたことを別の言葉で分かりやすく説明したり、補足したりする際に使われます。例を示す際には e.g. (exempli gratia) が使われます。

Bring warm clothes, i.e., a coat and gloves. (暖かい服、すなわち、コートと手袋を持ってきてください。)

2. ある言葉や概念を別の言葉で言い換えて説明する

ある言葉やフレーズが指す内容を、より具体的または分かりやすい別の言葉で言い換える際に使われます。前述の内容と完全に同一のものを指します。

He is a luddite, i.e., someone who dislikes technology. (彼はラッダイト、すなわち技術を嫌う人です。)

• He is a luddite: 彼はラッダイトだ（技術革新に反対する人）
• i.e.: すなわち
• someone who dislikes technology: 技術が嫌いな人

Please come on Thursday, i.e., tomorrow. (木曜日、つまり明日来てください。)
