1. （公式に）同意する、承認する

提案や決定などに対して、公式または正式な形で同意や承認を与える様子を表します。

The board was asked to give assent to the proposal. (取締役会はその提案への同意を求められた。)

• The board: 取締役会を指します。
• was asked: ～するように求められた、依頼された、という意味です。（受け身）
• to give assent: 同意すること、承認すること、という意味です。
• to the proposal.: その提案に、という意味です。

The president gave his assent to the new law. (大統領は新法に同意した。)

• The president: 大統領や社長などを指します。
• gave his assent: 彼の同意を与えた、つまり同意した、という意味です。
