1. 高速道路などで追い越しのために指定された一番左側の車線。

高速道路や多車線道路において、他の車両を追い越すことを目的として指定されている車線です。主に左側通行の国では最も左側の車線、右側通行の国では最も右側の車線を指します。

The car sped up in the passing lane. (その車は追い越し車線で加速した。)

• The car: 特定の車を指します。
• sped up: 速度を上げた、加速したという意味です。
• in the passing lane: 追い越し車線の中で、という意味です。

Drivers should only use the passing lane to overtake. (運転手は追い越しのためだけに追い越し車線を使うべきだ。)

2. 追い越し時に一時的に使用する車線。

走行車線よりも速い速度で走る車両が、先行する車両を安全に追い越すために一時的に利用する車線です。追い越しが完了したら、速やかに走行車線に戻ることが交通規則上推奨されます。

It's dangerous to cruise in the passing lane. (追い越し車線をゆっくり走行するのは危険だ。)
