1. 何かの中心や内部から離れた場所、または表面部分を指します。

物理的なものの「外側」や「外部」を示す形容詞です。中心から離れた場所、あるいは表面に最も近い部分といったニュアンスで使われます。

The outer layer of the onion was peeled off. (タマネギの一番外側の層が剥がされました。)

• The outer layer: 最も外側の層を指します。
• of the onion: タマネギの、という意味です。
• was peeled off: 剥がされた、という意味の受動態です。

They built a wall around the outer perimeter of the property. (彼らは敷地の外周に壁を建てました。)

• They built: 彼らが建てた、という意味です。
• a wall: 壁を、という意味です。
• around the outer perimeter: 外周の周りに、という意味です。
• of the property: その敷地の、という意味です。

2. 外側に着用する衣服のこと、または物の外部そのもの。

衣服の場合は「アウター」という名詞で使われ、上着やコートなど、一番外側に着るものを指します。また、一般的に物の「外側の部分」を指す名詞としても用いられます。

She put on a warm outer before going out in the cold. (彼女は寒い中出かける前に、暖かいアウターを着ました。)
