1. 物事や建物の外側、外部。

建物、乗り物、物体などの外側の部分や表面を指す場合に使われます。

The exterior of the old house needed painting. (その古い家の外観は塗り替えが必要だった。)

• needed painting: 「塗り替えが必要だった」という状態を表します。
