1. 本体から分かれて生じた枝や支流、またはそこから派生したもの。

植物の枝のように、本流や本体から分かれて新しく生じたものや、そこから派生したものを指す際に使われます。物理的な分岐だけでなく、比喩的にも使われます。

An offshoot of the main trail led to a small waterfall. (その主要な道から分かれた小道が小さな滝へと続いていた。)
