1. 以前に言ったことを間違いだったと認め、撤回すること。特に自信満々に言ったことや批判的な発言について、恥を忍んで間違いを認めること。

過去に自信を持って発言したことや、他人に対して批判的に述べたことが、後になって事実と異なることが判明し、その発言を撤回せざるを得ない状況を表します。多くの場合、屈辱的な意味合いを含みます。

He boasted that his team would win easily, but after they lost, he had to eat his words. (彼は自分のチームが楽勝すると豪語したが、負けた後、自分の言葉を撤回せざるを得なかった。)
