1. ある団体や組織の長、特に大学の学長や校長。

大学や大学附属学校の長を指す場合が多いですが、教会（特に聖公会）の聖職者である牧師を指すこともあります。どちらの場合も、その組織における指導的な立場にある人物というイメージです。

The university rector addressed the students at the assembly. (その大学の学長は集会で学生たちに話しかけた。)

• the students: 学生たちに
• at the assembly.: 集会で。

He was appointed rector of the new college. (彼は新しい大学の学長に任命された。)

The rector delivered a sermon on Sunday. (牧師は日曜日に説教をした。)

2. 聖公会などにおける牧師。

特にイギリスの聖公会などで、主任司祭（牧師）を指す言葉として使われます。単に「牧師」と言うよりも、より公式な響きがあります。

The parish is served by a rector and his assistant. (その教区は牧師とその助手によって奉仕されている。)

• and his assistant.: そして彼の助手。

The rector blessed the congregation. (牧師は会衆を祝福した。)
