1. 二つのうちの、後者

二つのものが挙げられた際に、後から言及された方や、二つ目のものを指す際に使われます。

Of the two options, I prefer the latter. (二つの選択肢のうち、私は後者を選びます。)

• Of the two options,: 「二つの選択肢のうち」という意味です。
• I: 「私」という人を指します。
• prefer: 「～の方を好む」「～の方を選ぶ」という意味です。
• the latter: 「後者」を指します。

He offered me either a coffee or tea; I chose the latter. (彼は私にコーヒーかお茶のどちらかを提案しましたが、私は後者を選びました。)

2. 時間や順序などが、後半や終わりに近い方にあること

期間や一連の事柄において、終わりや後半に近い部分を指す際に使われます。

• in: 場所や時間を指す前置詞です。
• the latter half of the year: 「その年の後半」を意味します。

during the latter stages of the project (そのプロジェクトの後半段階の間)

• during: 「～の間」という意味の前置詞です。
• the latter stages of the project: 「そのプロジェクトの後半段階」を意味します。

They met in the latter part of the afternoon. (彼らは午後の後半に会いました。)
