1. 紀元450年から1150年頃までイングランドとその一部で話されていた英語の最も古い形態。アングロサクソン語とも呼ばれる。

英語の歴史的発展における初期段階を指し、現代英語とは文法、発音、語彙において大きく異なります。主にアングロサクソン人が話した言語で、多くのゲルマン語の影響が見られます。
