M期は、細胞が実際に分裂する段階を指します。これには、核が2つに分かれるプロセス（有糸分裂または減数分裂）と、細胞質が2つに分かれて2つの新しい娘細胞が形成されるプロセス（サイトカインシス）が含まれます。これは細胞周期の中で最も劇的な変化が起こる時期です。
