1. 恐怖、不安、疑念といった感情を和らげたり、鎮めたりする。また、痛みや空腹などの不快感を軽減する。

不安、恐怖、心配、疑念などの感情、あるいは痛みや飢えといった不快な感覚を和らげ、軽減し、最終的に鎮めることを指します。感情的な揺れを落ち着かせたり、肉体的な苦痛を減らしたりする際に使われる動詞です。
