1. 企業が物流業務の一部または全部を外部の専門業者に委託する事業形態。

製造業や小売業などの企業が、自社で行っていた物流業務（輸送、保管、流通加工、情報管理など）を、専門知識と設備を持つ外部の物流企業に包括的に委託する形態を指します。これにより、企業はコア業務に集中し、物流コストの削減や効率化を図ることができます。3PLは、このような第三者による物流サービス提供者自体も指すことがあります。
