音の強さとは、音波が伝わる方向に対して単位面積あたりに伝わる音のエネルギー量（パワー）を指します。音の大きさと混同されがちですが、物理的な量を指すため、より客観的な指標です。単位はワット毎平方メートル (W/m²) です。
