1. 内臓壁などに存在する、不随意に収縮する筋肉。

胃や腸、血管、気管などの内臓壁にあり、自律神経によって自動的に収縮・弛緩する筋肉組織を指します。私たちの意志では動かせない「不随意筋」の一種で、顕微鏡で見ると横縞（横紋）がないため「平滑筋」と呼ばれます。消化、血圧の調節、呼吸器系の機能などに重要な役割を果たします。
