1. 機器の操作装置、操縦桿、制御部

機械やシステムの機能や動きを調整・操作するための、ボタン、レバー、ダイヤルなどの総称です。通常、複数形で使われます。

The pilot grabbed the controls of the aircraft. (パイロットは航空機の操縦桿を握った。)

• The pilot: 航空機の操縦士。
• grabbed: (素早く)つかんだ、握った。
• the controls: ここでは飛行機を操作するための操縦装置や操縦桿を指します。
• of the aircraft: その航空機の。

These are the controls for the heating system. (これらが暖房システムの制御装置です。)

• the controls: ここでは暖房システムを操作するための制御装置や設定部を指します。
• for the heating system: 暖房システムのための。

2. ～を制御する、管理する、支配する

人、物、または状況に対して影響力を行使し、それを管理下におく、または指定された方法で機能させることを意味します。この場合は動詞の三人称単数現在形です。

He controls a large team of engineers. (彼は大規模な技術者チームを管理している。)

• He: 彼が。
• controls: 管理している、統制している。(動詞 control の三人称単数現在形)
• a large team: 大規模なチーム。
• of engineers: 技術者の。

The remote controls the TV. (リモコンがテレビを操作します。)

• The remote: そのリモコン。
• controls: 操作する、制御する。(動詞 control の三人称単数現在形)

The government controls the flow of information. (政府は情報の流れを統制している。)
