1. 国勢調査、人口調査

政府などが国民の人口、年齢、職業、居住地などの状況を統計的に調査すること。広義には、特定の集団や地域の状況を詳細に数えたり調べたりする調査全般を指すこともあります。

The government conducts a census every ten years. (政府は10年ごとに国勢調査を実施します。)

• The government: 「政府」を指します。
• conducts: 「～を行う」「実施する」という意味です。
• a census: 「一つの国勢調査」を指します。
• every ten years: 「10年ごとに」という意味です。

Data from the latest census is used for urban planning. (最新の国勢調査からのデータは都市計画に利用されます。)

2. 統計、一覧

特定の分野や集団に関する数値的な集計や統計データ、またはそれらをまとめた一覧や報告書を指すことがあります。

The annual census of bird species shows an increase. (鳥類の種の毎年の集計は増加を示しています。)

• The annual census: 「毎年の集計」「毎年の統計」を指します。
• of bird species: 「鳥類の種の」という意味です。
• shows an increase.: 「増加を示している」という意味です。

We need a census of all the equipment in the lab. (研究室にある全ての機器の一覧が必要です。)
